Alpaca Blend Throw Blankets
Alpaca has been used since the ancient times to keep Peruvians warm in the high Andes mountains of Peru. The Incas first bred alpacas for their wool around 5000 BC. The wool was used to make clothes for royals and was known as 'the fibre of the gods'.
Our throw blankets are made by a local family in the mountains. The family splits up into 3 production lines, each of which moves the blankets through various stages in the dying process. Instead of the usual 3 stages of dying and weaving, this particular family’s unique method incorporates a total of 7 different stages including hand finishing each piece. Each colour combination and pattern is unique and made in small batches hence the limited quantities.
Alpaca is said to be 4 times warmer than wool. It is extremely durable, soft to touch and lightweight. Alpaca wool is sustainable, eco-friendly and hypoallergenic (allergy free). Keeping alpacas is sustainable since they live in the wild in their natural habitat. Weaving alpaca wool is a traditional craft which follows fair-trade guidelines.
